Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp matcha powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup white chocolate chips

Finishing

  • 1 tbsp milk (for brushing)
  • Optional Glaze: 1/2 cup powdered sugar, 1-2 tbsp milk, 1/4 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat & Prep: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prepare for baking the scones.
  2. Make the Dry Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, matcha powder, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until evenly combined.
  3. Incorporate Butter: Add the cold, cubed unsalted butter to the dry ingredients and cut it in using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized pieces scattered throughout.
  4. Mix Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  5. Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Pour the wet ingredients into the flour and butter mixture and gently mix until just combined. Be careful not to overmix to keep the scones tender.
  6. Fold in White Chocolate Chips: Gently fold in the white chocolate chips to evenly distribute them throughout the dough.
  7. Shape the Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently shape it into a 1-inch thick disc.
  8. Cut the Scones: Cut the disc into 8 equal wedges, or use a round cutter to form traditional circular scones, then place them spaced evenly on the prepared baking sheet.
  9. Brush with Milk: Brush the tops of the scones lightly with 1 tablespoon of milk for a golden finish during baking.
  10. Bake: Bake the scones in the preheated oven for 15 to 18 minutes, or until the edges turn lightly golden and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  11. Cool: Remove the scones from the oven and allow them to cool on a wire rack to room temperature.
  12. Prepare Optional Glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth, adjusting milk quantity for desired consistency.
  13. Glaze the Scones: Drizzle the glaze over the cooled scones to add a sweet finishing touch, if desired.

Notes

  • Use cold butter to achieve flaky, tender scones.
  • Do not over mix the dough to avoid tough scones.
  • Matcha powder can be substituted or adjusted based on your flavor preference.
  • White chocolate chips add sweetness that balances the earthy matcha; dark or milk chocolate can be used but will change the flavor profile.
  • Glazing the scones is optional but adds a lovely sweet sheen and extra flavor.
  • Store cooled scones in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or freeze for longer storage.
