Ingredients
Scale
Teriyaki Sauce
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons light brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
Main Ingredients
- 1 lb broccoli, cut into bite-size florets
- 1 lb flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain (about 1/4-inch thick)
- 2 tbsp olive oil, divided
- 1 tbsp sesame seeds
Instructions
- Prepare the Sauce: In a small mixing bowl, dissolve 1 tablespoon cornstarch in 1/2 cup water. Add 1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce, 2 tablespoons light brown sugar, 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger, 2 cloves minced garlic, and 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes. Stir well and set aside.
- Prep Vegetables and Meat: Cut the broccoli into bite-sized florets and thinly slice the flank steak against the grain, about 1/4-inch thick. Set both aside.
- Cook Broccoli: Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the broccoli florets and stir briefly. Pour in about 2 tablespoons water, cover with a lid, and steam the broccoli for a few minutes until softened. Remove the lid and continue cooking until all water has evaporated. Transfer broccoli to a plate and set aside.
- Cook Beef: Add the remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil to the skillet and increase heat to high. Arrange the flank steak slices in a single layer in the pan. Cook for a few minutes, stirring occasionally until the beef is cooked through and browned. If excess liquid forms, scoop it out and discard.
- Combine and Thicken Sauce: Reduce heat to medium-low and pour the prepared teriyaki sauce into the skillet with the beef. Stir to combine and cook for a few minutes until the sauce starts to bubble and thicken.
- Finish the Stir Fry: Add the cooked broccoli back into the skillet and toss with the beef and sauce until evenly coated and heated through.
- Serve: Sprinkle 1 tablespoon sesame seeds on top and serve immediately with steamed rice or your preferred side.
Notes
- For a spicier stir fry, increase the red pepper flakes or add fresh chili slices.
- Make sure to slice the beef thinly against the grain for tenderness.
- Use low sodium soy sauce to control salt levels in the dish.
- You can substitute flank steak with sirloin or skirt steak.
- This recipe can be doubled if needed, just cook in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan.
