Description

A quick and flavorful Teriyaki Beef and Broccoli Stir Fry made with tender flank steak, fresh broccoli, and a savory homemade teriyaki sauce. This stir fry is perfect for a nutritious weeknight dinner and served best with steamed rice.

Ingredients

Scale

Teriyaki Sauce

  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb broccoli, cut into bite-size florets
  • 1 lb flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain (about 1/4-inch thick)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil, divided
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sauce: In a small mixing bowl, dissolve 1 tablespoon cornstarch in 1/2 cup water. Add 1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce, 2 tablespoons light brown sugar, 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger, 2 cloves minced garlic, and 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes. Stir well and set aside.
  2. Prep Vegetables and Meat: Cut the broccoli into bite-sized florets and thinly slice the flank steak against the grain, about 1/4-inch thick. Set both aside.
  3. Cook Broccoli: Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the broccoli florets and stir briefly. Pour in about 2 tablespoons water, cover with a lid, and steam the broccoli for a few minutes until softened. Remove the lid and continue cooking until all water has evaporated. Transfer broccoli to a plate and set aside.
  4. Cook Beef: Add the remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil to the skillet and increase heat to high. Arrange the flank steak slices in a single layer in the pan. Cook for a few minutes, stirring occasionally until the beef is cooked through and browned. If excess liquid forms, scoop it out and discard.
  5. Combine and Thicken Sauce: Reduce heat to medium-low and pour the prepared teriyaki sauce into the skillet with the beef. Stir to combine and cook for a few minutes until the sauce starts to bubble and thicken.
  6. Finish the Stir Fry: Add the cooked broccoli back into the skillet and toss with the beef and sauce until evenly coated and heated through.
  7. Serve: Sprinkle 1 tablespoon sesame seeds on top and serve immediately with steamed rice or your preferred side.

Notes

  • For a spicier stir fry, increase the red pepper flakes or add fresh chili slices.
  • Make sure to slice the beef thinly against the grain for tenderness.
  • Use low sodium soy sauce to control salt levels in the dish.
  • You can substitute flank steak with sirloin or skirt steak.
  • This recipe can be doubled if needed, just cook in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan.
