Frosting Ingredients
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
- 2 tablespoons milk, plus more as needed
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- Optional: food coloring
- Optional: sprinkles for decorating
Instructions
- Beat Butter: In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy and smooth, about 1–2 minutes.
- Add Sugar: Gradually add the powdered sugar, beating on low speed until combined.
- Mix Liquids and Salt: Add the milk, vanilla extract, and salt to the mixture, then increase the speed to medium and beat until light and fluffy, about 2–3 minutes.
- Adjust Consistency: If the frosting is too thick, add a teaspoon of milk at a time until the desired consistency is reached.
- Color Frosting: If using food coloring, divide the frosting into bowls and mix in the desired colors.
- Decorate Cookies: Spread or pipe the frosting onto cooled sugar cookies and decorate with sprinkles if desired.
- Set Frosting: Let the frosting set at room temperature for 1–2 hours if stacking or packaging cookies.
Notes
- For a firmer set, reduce the milk slightly.
- To make it dairy-free, use plant-based butter and non-dairy milk.
- Gel food coloring gives the best color without thinning the frosting.
