Strawberry Sauce Ingredients
- 1 lb strawberries, rinsed, hulled, and cut into smaller pieces
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp water
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
Instructions
- Prepare the Ingredients: In a medium saucepan, combine the hulled strawberries, sugar, and lemon juice. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, for about 1 minute after the mixture comes to a boil to start releasing the strawberry juices and dissolve the sugar.
- Break Down the Strawberries: Use a potato masher or wooden spoon to mash the strawberries to your preferred consistency. For a sauce with some texture, mash lightly, or for a smooth sauce, mash more thoroughly until well blended.
- Thicken the Sauce: Create a slurry by mixing the water and cornstarch until smooth. Add this slurry to the strawberry mixture and stir quickly. Continue cooking for another 60 seconds to let the sauce thicken, then remove the saucepan from the heat.
- Adjust the Taste: Taste the sauce and if needed, add additional sugar for sweetness or lemon juice for acidity and stir well to incorporate.
- Cool and Store: Allow the strawberry sauce to cool to room temperature before transferring it into a glass container. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. The sauce will thicken further as it cools.
Notes
- Use fresh ripe strawberries for the best flavor.
- Adjust the consistency by varying how much you mash the strawberries.
- This sauce can be stored in the refrigerator for up to one week.
- For a natural thickener, cornstarch slurry is used, but arrowroot powder can be a substitute for a gluten-free option.
- Serve warm or cold over pancakes, waffles, ice cream, cheesecake, or yogurt.
