Ingredients
Scale
Banana Mixture
- 1 ripe banana
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 pinch ground nutmeg
- 1 pinch salt
Liquid and Flavorings
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Butter
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
Instructions
- Mash the Banana: Peel and mash one ripe banana until smooth, yielding about 1/2 cup of mashed banana.
- Melt Butter: In a medium saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter over medium heat, ensuring it doesn’t brown or burn.
- Add Brown Sugar: Stir in 1/2 cup packed brown sugar and let it dissolve and bubble gently to form a syrup base.
- Add Spices and Banana: Mix in the mashed banana, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and a pinch of ground nutmeg. Cook for 1-2 minutes to meld the flavors together.
- Add Water and Simmer: Pour in 1/2 cup of water, reduce the heat to low, and let the mixture simmer for 5-6 minutes while stirring occasionally to thicken the syrup and enhance the flavors.
- Finish with Vanilla and Salt: Remove the saucepan from heat, then stir in 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract and a pinch of salt to balance and deepen the flavor profile.
- Cool and Store: Allow the syrup to cool slightly before serving. Store any leftovers in an airtight jar in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
Notes
- Use a very ripe banana for the best natural sweetness and flavor.
- If the syrup thickens too much after cooling, warm it gently before serving.
- This syrup is excellent on pancakes, waffles, oatmeal, or ice cream.
- You can adjust the amount of cinnamon and nutmeg based on your preference.
- Store the syrup refrigerated and consume within 5 days for optimal freshness.
