Description

Salisbury Steak is a classic comfort food dish featuring seasoned ground beef patties simmered in a rich mushroom and onion gravy. Hearty and satisfying, it’s perfect served over mashed potatoes or rice.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon oil (for frying)
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (extra for gravy)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Shape into 4 oval patties.
  2. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Brown the patties on both sides (about 3–4 minutes per side). Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add onions and mushrooms. Cook until soft, about 5 minutes.
  4. Sprinkle flour over the vegetables and stir to coat. Cook for 1 minute.
  5. Gradually whisk in beef broth, ketchup, and additional Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer until slightly thickened.
  6. Return patties to the skillet and spoon gravy over them. Cover and simmer for 10–15 minutes, or until patties are cooked through.
  7. Serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.

Notes

  • For extra richness, use a mix of ground beef and pork.
  • Make ahead and reheat gently on the stove or in the oven.
  • Leftovers store well and taste even better the next day.
