Description

Mexican Picadillo is a flavorful ground beef stew made with tomatoes, potatoes, raisins, olives, and a blend of spices. It’s a comforting dish that is perfect for serving with rice or tortillas.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 medium potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1 medium carrot, peeled and diced
  • 1 (14 oz) can diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 1/4 cup green olives, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves (optional)
  • 1/2 cup beef broth or water
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon as it cooks. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet and sauté for 2-3 minutes, until the onion becomes translucent.
  3. Add the diced potatoes and carrots, and cook for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Stir in the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, raisins, olives, cumin, cinnamon, chili powder, and cloves (if using). Mix well to combine.
  5. Add the beef broth or water, and bring the mixture to a simmer. Cover the skillet and cook for 20-25 minutes, or until the potatoes and carrots are tender and the flavors have melded together.
  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste. If the mixture is too dry, add a little more beef broth or water as needed.
  7. Remove from heat and garnish with fresh cilantro, if desired. Serve with rice, tortillas, or a side of beans.

Notes

  • Picadillo can be made ahead of time and reheated. The flavors often improve after a day or two.
  • You can add other ingredients like bell peppers, peas, or even chopped apples for extra flavor.
  • If you prefer a spicier dish, add some diced jalapeños or a pinch of cayenne pepper.
