Description

This marinated tofu recipe infuses firm tofu with a savory and slightly sweet blend of soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, maple syrup, garlic, and fresh ginger. The tofu is pressed to remove excess moisture, marinated to soak up the flavors, and then pan-fried to a perfect golden crisp. Ideal as a protein-packed addition to rice, noodles, or salads, this easy-to-make dish delivers bold, well-rounded taste and a satisfying texture.

Ingredients

Scale

Tofu

  • 1 block firm tofu (14 oz), drained and pressed

Marinade

  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger

Optional Garnishes

  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon green onions, chopped

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tofu: Drain and press the tofu to remove excess moisture by wrapping it in a clean kitchen towel and placing a heavy object on top. Let it press for 15–20 minutes to ensure the tofu is firm and ready to absorb the marinade.
  2. Make the Marinade: In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, maple syrup (or honey), minced garlic, and grated fresh ginger until combined, creating a flavorful marinade.
  3. Marinate: Cut the pressed tofu into cubes or slices, then place it into a shallow dish or a zip-top bag. Pour the prepared marinade over the tofu, toss to coat evenly, and refrigerate for 30 minutes up to 2 hours to allow the flavors to penetrate.
  4. Cook: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add a small amount of oil. Place the marinated tofu in the skillet and cook for 4–5 minutes on each side, or until all sides are crispy and golden brown.
  5. Serve: Transfer the cooked tofu to a plate, sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds and chopped green onions if desired. Serve the tofu over rice, noodles, or incorporate it into salads for a delicious protein boost.

Notes

  • Pressing the tofu properly removes moisture and helps it absorb the marinade better.
  • The marinade can be adjusted to taste, increasing sweetness or acidity as preferred.
  • For a vegan version, use maple syrup instead of honey.
  • Cooking time may vary depending on tofu thickness; ensure tofu is crispy and golden on all sides.
  • This marinated tofu can also be grilled or baked if preferred, but pan-frying offers the crispiest texture.
