Description

Create a flavorful and customizable homemade taco seasoning blend using common spices. This easy no-cook recipe combines chili powder, cumin, paprika, garlic and onion powders, oregano, salt, pepper, and optional red pepper flakes to deliver a vibrant taco seasoning mix that can be used to season ground meat or vegetables for authentic Mexican-American dishes.

Ingredients

Scale

Spice Mix Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika (smoked or sweet)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)

Instructions

  1. Combine spices: In a small bowl or jar, add chili powder, ground cumin, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano, salt, black pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes if using. Carefully measure and add each spice for balance and flavor.
  2. Mix thoroughly: Stir all the ingredients together with a spoon or shake the jar vigorously until the mixture is uniform with no clumps and all spices are well incorporated.
  3. Store or use: Use immediately to season 1 pound of ground meat by cooking it with 1/2 cup water and this seasoning mix, or store the blend in an airtight container away from light and heat for up to 6 months for future use.

Notes

  • This blend yields approximately 3 tablespoons, similar to one store-bought taco seasoning packet.
  • Adjust salt levels according to dietary needs or preferences; omit or reduce salt for a low-sodium version.
  • To customize heat level, increase or leave out crushed red pepper flakes.
  • Use about 2 to 3 tablespoons of seasoning for every pound of ground meat, adding 1/2 cup water while cooking to evenly distribute flavors.
