Description

Hawaiian Sweet Bread Strata is a tropical-inspired breakfast casserole made with fluffy sweet bread, eggs, cheese, and savory meats or veggies, soaked overnight and baked to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 (16 oz) loaf Hawaiian sweet bread, cubed
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk or half-and-half
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar or Swiss cheese
  • 1 cup cooked ham, diced (or cooked bacon/sausage)
  • 1/2 cup pineapple tidbits, drained
  • 1/4 cup chopped green onions
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Butter or cooking spray for greasing

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  2. Evenly spread the cubed Hawaiian sweet bread in the dish.
  3. Sprinkle diced ham, pineapple, green onions, and shredded cheese over the bread cubes.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, salt, and pepper.
  5. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread mixture, pressing lightly to ensure all cubes are soaked.
  6. Cover and refrigerate overnight (or at least 4 hours).
  7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Uncover and bake for 45–50 minutes, or until the center is set and the top is golden brown.
  9. Let cool for 5–10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Make it vegetarian by omitting the meat or replacing it with sautéed veggies.
  • For added sweetness, mix in a bit of maple syrup or brown sugar to the egg mixture.
  • Strata can be made a day ahead for easy entertaining.
