Description

Gyeran Bap, or Korean Egg Rice, is a simple and comforting dish featuring warm, fluffy rice topped with perfectly fried eggs, seasoned with soy sauce and sesame oil, and garnished with toasted sesame seeds, green onions, and optional nori strips. This quick and easy meal takes just 10 minutes to prepare and is perfect for a satisfying breakfast or light meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Rice

  • 2 cups cooked white rice (preferably short-grain or medium-grain rice)

Eggs

  • 2 large eggs

Seasoning and Garnishes

  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce (or to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon butter (optional, for added richness)
  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 green onion, finely chopped
  • Nori (seaweed) strips, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Rice: Divide the cooked rice evenly into two serving bowls and keep it warm while you prepare the eggs.
  2. Fry the Eggs: Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and add the sesame oil. Crack the eggs into the skillet and cook until the whites are fully set and the yolks reach your desired level of doneness; traditionally, the eggs are sunny-side up.
  3. Assemble the Dish: Place a fried egg on top of each bowl of warm rice.
  4. Add Seasoning: Drizzle soy sauce over the rice and eggs, adjusting to your taste. Optionally, add a small pat of butter to each bowl for extra richness.
  5. Garnish: Sprinkle toasted sesame seeds and the finely chopped green onions over the top. Add nori strips for additional texture and flavor, if desired.
  6. Serve: Before eating, mix the egg, soy sauce, and rice together thoroughly to enjoy the full blend of flavors.

Notes

  • For best results, use freshly cooked short-grain rice as it is sticky and ideal for mixing with eggs and soy sauce.
  • The yolk can be cooked to preference, but traditional serving is sunny-side up with runny yolks.
  • Adjust soy sauce quantity according to your preferred saltiness.
  • Butter is optional but adds a creamy richness to the dish.
  • Garnishing with nori strips adds a nice umami flavor and texture contrast.
  • This dish can be customized by adding kimchi or other side dishes for a more complete meal.
