Scale
Dough Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 3/4 cup warm water (110°F)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (plus extra for brushing)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
Topping
- 1 tablespoon fresh garlic, minced (or more for extra flavor)
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano (optional)
- Fresh parsley or cilantro, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes, or until the mixture becomes frothy, indicating the yeast is active.
- Prepare Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and garlic powder. Add olive oil and create a well in the center. Pour in the yeast mixture and stir until the dough begins to form.
- Knead Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook for the same duration to develop the gluten properly.
- First Rise: Place the kneaded dough in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm spot for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
- Shape Flatbreads: Punch down the risen dough and divide it into four equal portions. Roll each portion into a thin circle or oval, roughly 6 to 8 inches in diameter.
- Prepare Garlic Oil: In a small bowl, combine minced garlic with a tablespoon of olive oil. Brush this mixture generously over the surface of each rolled-out flatbread, optionally sprinkle dried oregano on top for herbaceous flavor.
- Bake Flatbreads: Arrange the prepared flatbreads on the baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 10–12 minutes, or until the flatbreads turn golden brown and develop slightly crispy edges.
- Finish and Garnish: Remove the flatbreads from the oven and immediately brush with additional olive oil if desired. Sprinkle chopped fresh parsley or cilantro on top for a fresh, vibrant finish.
- Serve: Serve the garlic flatbreads warm alongside dipping sauces or as a flavorful accompaniment to your main dishes.
Notes
- For extra garlic flavor, add more minced fresh garlic to the garlic oil brushing.
- If you prefer softer flatbreads, reduce the baking time slightly.
- Dried oregano is optional but adds a nice herbal note.
- You can substitute all-purpose flour with bread flour for a chewier texture.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container and reheat in the oven or toaster for best results.
