- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1/2 tsp sugar
- 4 slices Swiss or Gruyère cheese
- 4 hamburger buns

- Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties 4-5 minutes per side or until desired doneness is reached.
- Top each burger with a slice of cheese during the last minute of cooking to melt.
- Toast buns lightly. Spread mayo or mustard if desired.
- Assemble burgers by placing patties on buns and topping with a generous portion of caramelized onions. Add lettuce if desired.
Notes
- Use Gruyère for a more authentic French onion flavor.
- Caramelized onions can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for up to 5 days.
- Try adding a splash of beef broth or wine to the onions for deeper flavor.
