Description

Savory French Onion Burgers loaded with caramelized onions and melted cheese, bringing the classic flavors of French onion soup into a juicy grilled burger.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 4 slices Swiss or Gruyère cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • Optional: mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, lettuce

Instructions

  1. In a skillet over medium heat, heat olive oil and butter. Add sliced onions and sugar. Cook slowly, stirring often, until onions are deep golden and caramelized, about 25-30 minutes.
  2. In a bowl, mix ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Form into 4 patties.
  3. Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties 4-5 minutes per side or until desired doneness is reached.
  4. Top each burger with a slice of cheese during the last minute of cooking to melt.
  5. Toast buns lightly. Spread mayo or mustard if desired.
  6. Assemble burgers by placing patties on buns and topping with a generous portion of caramelized onions. Add lettuce if desired.

Notes

  • Use Gruyère for a more authentic French onion flavor.
  • Caramelized onions can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for up to 5 days.
  • Try adding a splash of beef broth or wine to the onions for deeper flavor.
