Batter Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
For Frying & Serving
- Oil for frying (vegetable or canola oil)
- Powdered sugar, for dusting
- Optional: chocolate or caramel sauce for dipping
Instructions
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt to ensure they are well combined.
- Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, mix the milk, egg, and vanilla extract. Pour this wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until the batter is smooth without lumps.
- Heat Oil: Pour oil into a deep pot and heat it to approximately 350°F (175°C), which is ideal for frying.
- Pipe Batter into Oil: Transfer the batter into a squeeze bottle or piping bag. Carefully squeeze the batter into the hot oil in long, thin strips to resemble fries.
- Fry until Golden: Cook the batter strips for 1-2 minutes on each side, or until they turn golden brown and crisp.
- Drain Excess Oil: Use a slotted spoon to remove the funnel cake fries from the oil and place them onto paper towels to drain away excess oil.
- Serve: Dust the fries generously with powdered sugar and serve warm. Add chocolate or caramel sauce on the side for dipping if desired.
Notes
- Ensure the oil is at the correct temperature to achieve crispy fries without absorbing too much oil.
- You can substitute milk with a non-dairy alternative if desired.
- Use a heat-safe squeeze bottle for easier batter piping.
- Serve immediately for best texture and flavor.
- Leftover fries can be reheated briefly in the oven to regain crispiness.
