Scale
Materials
- 1 clear plastic bottle or glass jar
Liquids
- 3/4 cup water
- 1 cup vegetable oil or baby oil
Additives
- 10 drops of food coloring (any vibrant color)
- 1 Alka-Seltzer tablet (broken into smaller pieces)
- Optional: Glitter or small glow beads for visual effect
Instructions
- Fill with Water
Start by filling your bottle or jar with water until it’s about 1/4 full. This provides the base for your colorful lava lamp effect. - Add Oil
Gently pour in the vegetable oil until the bottle is nearly full. Let the bottle sit for a minute to allow the oil and water to separate into distinct layers. - Add Color
Drop 10 drops of your chosen food coloring into the bottle. Watch as the color slowly moves through the oil and disperses in the water layer below, creating beautiful visual effects. - Enhance with Sparkles (Optional)
For extra visual interest, sprinkle in some glitter or small glow beads. These elements add sparkle and glow to your lava lamp bubbles. - Add Alka-Seltzer
Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into 2–3 pieces. Drop one piece into the bottle and observe the reaction that produces bubbles rising and falling, mimicking a classic lava lamp. - Enjoy the Effect
Sit back and enjoy the mesmerizing movement of bubbles as the bubbly reaction continues. - Repeat as Needed
When the bubbling slows, add another piece of Alka-Seltzer to keep the effect going for continued fun.
Notes
- Use a clear bottle or jar for the best visual effect.
- Experiment with different food coloring colors or combinations for varied appearances.
- Do not shake the bottle once the ingredients are combined to allow proper layering and bubbling.
- Supervise children during the experiment to prevent ingestion of Alka-Seltzer or other materials.
- Dispose of the mixture safely after use as it is not intended for consumption.
