For the Salisbury Steak Patties:
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp mustard powder
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
For the Gravy:
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 small onion, finely sliced
- 8 oz (225g) cremini or button mushrooms, sliced
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the Patties:
- In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard powder, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
- Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape into oval patties.
- Cook the Patties:
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add a drizzle of oil and sear the patties for 3-4 minutes per side until browned. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
- Make the Gravy:
- In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add the onions and mushrooms, and sauté until softened, about 5-6 minutes.
- Sprinkle in the flour and stir for 1-2 minutes until lightly golden.
- Slowly whisk in the beef broth, followed by Worcestershire sauce and Dijon mustard. Cook, stirring frequently, until the gravy thickens, about 3-4 minutes.
- Simmer the Patties in Gravy:
- Return the patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Cover and simmer on low heat for 10-15 minutes, or until the patties are fully cooked through.
- Serve:
- Serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles, with a generous ladle of the mushroom gravy on top.
Notes
- You can add a splash of cream to the gravy for a richer flavor.
- Substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
