Ingredients
Scale
- 40 salted saltine crackers
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 2 cups white chocolate chips
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Prepare the Baking Sheet:
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil, ensuring it’s well-covered for easy cleanup.
- Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, fitting them closely together.
- Make the Toffee Layer:
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter and brown sugar together, stirring frequently.
- Once the mixture reaches a boil, continue to cook for about 3 minutes until it thickens and takes on a deep caramel color.
- Carefully pour the hot toffee mixture over the arranged crackers, spreading it evenly to cover all the crackers.
- Bake:
- Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 5–6 minutes, or until the toffee is bubbly and has fully coated the crackers.
- Add the Chocolate Layer:
- Remove the baking sheet from the oven and immediately sprinkle the white chocolate chips over the hot toffee.
- Allow the chips to sit for about 5 minutes to melt. If they don’t melt completely, you can return the pan to the oven for an additional minute to help the melting process.
- Once melted, use a spatula to spread the white chocolate evenly over the toffee layer.
- Prepare and Add the Churro Topping:
- In a small bowl, combine the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon.
- While the white chocolate is still warm and unset, generously sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture over the top, ensuring even coverage.
- Cool and Serve:
- Allow the toffee to cool completely at room temperature. For quicker setting, you can place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for about 20–30 minutes.
- Once fully set and hardened, break the toffee into bite-sized pieces.
- Store the pieces in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two weeks.
Notes
- Variations: You can substitute saltine crackers with Club crackers, Ritz crackers, or graham crackers for a different base flavor. Additionally, consider adding toppings like chopped nuts, sprinkles, or a drizzle of caramel over the white chocolate before it sets for extra texture and flavor.
- Storage: Keep the toffee in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two weeks. It can also be frozen for up to two months; just ensure it’s well-sealed to maintain freshness.
