- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 1 cup Italian-style breadcrumbs
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 cups marinara sauce
- 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (for topping)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- Fresh basil for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Pound the chicken breasts to an even thickness using a meat mallet.
- Season the flour with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Dredge each chicken breast first in the flour, then in the beaten eggs, and finally in a mixture of breadcrumbs and 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese.
- In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Cook the chicken breasts for 2-3 minutes per side, until golden brown (they do not need to be fully cooked through).
- Place the browned chicken breasts in the prepared baking dish. Spoon marinara sauce over each piece, then top with shredded mozzarella and a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese.
- Bake uncovered for 20-25 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
- Garnish with fresh basil before serving, if desired.
Notes
- For an even crispier result, bake the breaded chicken for 5-7 minutes before adding sauce and cheese.
- Serve with spaghetti, a side salad, or garlic bread for a complete meal.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven for best results.
