Ingredients
Scale
For the Sloppy Joes:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- ½ cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 4–6 hoagie rolls or sub buns, split
For the Garlic Butter:
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley (or 1 teaspoon dried)
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
For Topping:
- 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella or provolone cheese
- Optional: grated Parmesan for topping
Instructions
- Cook the beef mixture: Preheat the oven to 400°F. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion until the beef is browned and the onion is tender, about 6–8 minutes. Drain excess fat. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute to release its flavor. Add ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Simmer the mixture for 3–5 minutes until it thickens and is heated through.
- Prepare garlic bread: In a small bowl, combine melted butter, minced garlic, chopped parsley, and garlic powder. Arrange the split hoagie rolls on a baking sheet with cut sides facing up. Generously brush the garlic butter mixture on each roll and place in the oven. Toast for 5 minutes until golden and fragrant.
- Assemble and broil the sandwiches: Spoon the sloppy joe mixture evenly onto the bottom halves of the toasted rolls. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella or provolone cheese generously over the meat. Place under the broiler for 2–3 minutes, watching closely, until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and slightly browned. Optionally sprinkle with grated Parmesan. Top with the remaining roll halves and serve warm.
Notes
- You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
- Add red pepper flakes to the beef mixture for a spicy kick.
- Serve with a side salad or fries for a complete comfort food meal.
