Description

Better Than Anything Bars are a rich and indulgent dessert featuring a chocolate cake mix base layered with sweetened condensed milk, caramel sauce, mini chocolate chips, and crunchy toffee bits. These bars are easy to make and perfect for parties or a delicious treat at home, with a gooey, caramel-infused texture and a perfect balance of chocolate and toffee flavors.

Ingredients

Scale

Base Layers

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (15.25 oz)
  • 1/2 cup melted butter
  • 1 large egg

Filling and Toppings

  • 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce (plus extra for drizzling)
  • 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped toffee bits
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt (optional for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Pan: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to ensure the bars do not stick and for easy removal.
  2. Make the Dough: In a large bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix, melted butter, and egg. Mix thoroughly until a thick dough forms, which will serve as the rich chocolate base.
  3. First Bake of Crust: Press two-thirds of the dough evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking pan to create the crust layer. Bake this layer for 10 minutes to set the base slightly before adding the fillings.
  4. Add Filling Layers: Remove the crust from the oven and pour the sweetened condensed milk evenly over the baked layer, followed by the caramel sauce. Sprinkle the mini chocolate chips and chopped toffee bits evenly over the caramel layer.
  5. Add Remaining Dough: Crumble the remaining one-third of the dough over the top. Leave some gaps to let the caramel peek through and create a beautiful layered effect while baking.
  6. Final Baking: Return the pan to the oven and bake for an additional 20 to 25 minutes. Bake until the top is set and slightly golden indicating the bars are fully baked.
  7. Cool and Garnish: Let the bars cool completely in the pan. Once cooled, drizzle with extra caramel sauce and sprinkle with sea salt if desired to enhance the flavor and presentation.
  8. Serve: Cut into 24 bars and serve as a decadent dessert perfect for any occasion.

Notes

  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
  • Chill the bars before cutting for cleaner, more precise slices.
  • You can swap the chocolate cake mix for devil’s food or German chocolate cake mix to vary flavors.
