Ingredients
Scale
Base
- 4 large croissants (preferably day-old)
Fruits
- 1½ cups mixed fresh berries (such as strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries)
Custard Mixture
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- ½ cup heavy cream
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
Optional Toppings & Serving
- Powdered sugar for dusting
- Maple syrup or whipped cream for serving
Instructions
- Prepare the baking dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×9-inch or similar-sized baking dish to prevent sticking.
- Arrange the croissants: Slice the croissants in half lengthwise or tear them into large chunks and place them evenly in the prepared baking dish.
- Add the berries: Scatter the mixed fresh berries evenly over and around the croissants, distributing the fruit throughout the dish.
- Make the custard: In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
- Pour custard over croissants and berries: Evenly pour the custard mixture over the croissants and berries, pressing down lightly to help the bread soak up the liquid.
- Soak the mixture: Let the dish sit for 10–15 minutes at room temperature to allow the croissants to fully absorb the custard. For a hands-off approach, cover and refrigerate overnight to enhance flavor and texture.
- Bake: Place the dish uncovered in the preheated oven and bake for 35–40 minutes, or until the custard is fully set and the top is beautifully golden brown.
- Cool and serve: Let it cool slightly before serving. Optionally dust with powdered sugar and serve warm with maple syrup or whipped cream for a decadent finish.
Notes
- Frozen berries can be used if fresh are not available; no need to thaw before baking.
- For extra flavor and texture, sprinkle lemon zest or sliced almonds on top before baking.
- This dish is excellent for brunch, holiday mornings, or as a comforting breakfast-for-dinner option.
