Description

Banana Bread Cinnamon Rolls combine the rich, moist flavor of banana bread with the gooey, spiced filling of classic cinnamon rolls for a unique and delicious twist on breakfast or dessert.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water (110°F)
  • 1/2 cup mashed ripe banana (about 1 large banana)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup milk, warm
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 1/2 to 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened (for filling)
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 12 tablespoons milk (to desired consistency)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water and let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, mix mashed banana, sugar, melted butter, warm milk, salt, egg, and the yeast mixture.
  3. Gradually add flour, 1 cup at a time, until a soft dough forms. Knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. In a small bowl, mix brown sugar and cinnamon for the filling.
  6. Punch down dough and roll into a rectangle about 12×16 inches. Spread softened butter over the dough and sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  7. Roll up the dough tightly from the long side and cut into 12 equal rolls.
  8. Place rolls in a greased 9×13 inch pan. Cover and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  9. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake rolls for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  10. While baking, prepare frosting by beating cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk until smooth.
  11. Let rolls cool slightly before spreading with cream cheese frosting. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Use overripe bananas for best flavor and natural sweetness.
  • Dough can be prepared the night before and refrigerated overnight before final rise.
  • Feel free to add chopped nuts or chocolate chips to the filling for variation.
