Description

Classic and comforting baked beans with a sweet and savory sauce, perfect as a side dish for BBQs, picnics, or holiday meals.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 cans (15 ounces each) of navy beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 cup onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup bell pepper, chopped (optional)
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup or honey
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 cup cooked bacon, crumbled (optional, for extra flavor)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the navy beans, onion, and bell pepper (if using).
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the ketchup, brown sugar, maple syrup (or honey), Dijon mustard, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, black pepper, salt, and garlic powder.
  4. Pour the sauce mixture over the beans and stir gently to combine. Add crumbled bacon if using and stir again.
  5. Transfer the bean mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it out evenly.
  6. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the sauce is bubbly and slightly thickened.
  7. Let the baked beans cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Serve as a side dish to BBQs, grilled meats, or burgers.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add a dash of hot sauce or a small amount of chili powder for a little heat.
  • If you want a vegetarian version, omit the bacon or use plant-based bacon.
  • These beans can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen for later use.
